Also, if this instance was retconned, a claim that is ambiguous at best, DC has un-retconned it. It's a featured story in DC's recently released collection, Superman vs. Darkseid. Obviously if this wasn't really Darkseid in this story, then it shouldn't have been in a collection called "Superman vs. Darkseid," even making up about one third of the full volume.
      Well, Darkseid is a skyfather.

Then Superman must be above skyfather, eh?

He has his moments but no, he has no chance against Darkseid unless Darkseid is weakened.

And featuring in a TPB does not un-retcon the retcon done by the writer of the scene himself. John Byrne retconned it.

Again, that image does not at all specify a particular Superman encounter with Darkseid and so there's no reason to believe it had to be Action #586. And of course DC featuring the story in a volume called Superman vs. Darkseid, with the story taking up about a third of the book, indicates the company's stance on the story, that is, this is Darkseid who Superman is fighting.

Yes, it does. Superman had only fought Darkseid in Action Comics 586 and the screen shows it.

Also it was shown in Action Comics 643 as well that Desaad is impersonating Darkseid.

Other than 586, in post crisis continuity, had Superman ever had any level of confrontation with DS either solo or with a group prior to the revelation that Desaad sometimes posed as DS. The dates and issue numbers bleed together for me but I find it hard to believe there was no other confrontation prior to that issue.

That said, we also know that prior to DOS Darkseid did meet Doomsday, and Doomsday came off as superior (was that Doomsday year one or something)...and there's no reason to think that wasn't the real DS, though admittedly a much younger one.

They HAVE tried to muddy the waters with DS to some extent, what with avatars for NGs and such, but I think there's still a lot of indication that DS isn't substantially more powerful than DC top tiers....
