As of now I have just skimmed the book after getting it but I am really confused about some things. Basically there is all the skuffling you expect and then Galactus comes out of the sun. The FF is of the mind that Galactus is going to lay the smack down on HE for doing all that he did.
Shockingly, he does not. HE says something about Galactus knowing he is important and blah blah. Galactus says something about eating the moon and that he has no herald, Surfer takes back power from the false herald and so on. So among things that confuse me are how HE is able to make a herald in the first place. He stole the PC from Surfer and then a star sphere. So even if he drained the power of that he should not be able to make a being as powerful as Surfer. So in the end this might be a depowering for Surfer if he is just getting back part of his power, even though I doubt Pak sees it that way.
The end of the story leaves it merky on why Galactus did not take the PC from the HE, as he stole it from his herald. Galactus seems sort of cruel to Surfer here. Not that they are buddy buddy but he treats Surfer as if this was all a choice. Since it was a hostile act against the servent I would imagine Galactus would have taken personel insult but he does not at all. Not to mention that Surfer's power in HE + star sphere apparently gives on cosmic importance? I think the place Pak is going to try and take this, if he gets another shot is to try and set up HE as a creator of worlds to balance Galactus the destroyer of worlds. Which is really really dumb IMO.
I was trying to give Pak a chance. He has written very good stories and a fairly good Surfer in the past. This story had potential but was a mess with how it was wrapped up. I think if he wanted to have HE keep the power and avoid Galactus for the time being he could have just had him take off outright and not be there when the big G came back. That would have made more sense and probably not a major concern for GAlactus at the moment. How it was done made it seem like Galactus was an idiot. At least that is what I saw.
Very strange story. Surfer had some decent showings at the start and sort of at the end, but all in all I was not a fan of this mini series. I think it had some potential to it but that was lost in the handling. Pak seems to have lost the ability to wrap a story up in a very coherent manner as far as I can tell. Chaos War was a mess from the get go. Surfer was not that bad but it was not good either.
pak ignores a lot of continuity and past character development from start to finish. without whipping out my early surfer vol. 3 issues, i'm almost positive that upon finally escaping earth, surfer asked galactus to return to him his emotions. when he did so, surfer was hit with the guilt of killing countless worlds for galactus for so many years. so having emotions was nothing new...
more recently in the original annihilation mini's, galactus once again returned surfer to his emotionless, more ruthless state... so despite what pak's story tells us, surfer hasn't been an emtionless robot for thousands of years.
also, surfer just now rediscovered how to love again because his emotions were returned to him? what? what happened to nova, mantis, and alicia masters who he loved WHILE he was a herald? shalla-bal? i'm sure i'm missing others, too.
despite other examples of ignoring continuity and just rehashing the whole random super villain stealing surfer's power story-line, the writing and art was also bad. that's two cosmic stories with huge potential that pak simply dropped the ball on completely.
