You bring up some pertinent points in your post. The Surfer and Galactus really are the ultimate writing challenge I feel. Not only does one need solid narrative skills but one also needs to convey the sense of wonder and majesty of characters whose home is the infinite.
I am resigned to having to sit through ten stories of dross for that one acceptable story, but here's a plea to future writers: try googling "cosmology" (along with "plotting", "pacing" and "characterisation"), or perhaps contact some astrophysicists, read and listen to what the state of contemporary science is, use what you learn to ground your world, incorporate it into your narrative and let your imagination run riot. If all you can come up with is "demons of distraction", you're not trying hard enough.
