I think his own comments support that assertion. I read an article where he said Marvel has 3 Thanoses (Thanosi?): The one in the movies, the one he writes and the one that other writers write.

Much the sdame can be said about the being Thanos was based upon, as darkseid has the classic Jack Kirby view, upcoming movie, and all other writers of him.

Starlin work with the Thanos/In betweener/warlock during time of Magus to me was top notch, and the First IG saga was also really good.
