A fair number of fans were not even alive when Darth Vader first appeared or were young when the last of the original films came out. He had lingering impact for quite some time.

We do not know if Thanos will have that sort of impact but it would be cool if he did. Vader was sort of one of a kind though. Even Star Wars cannot really redo Vader.
