The Flash opens with Barry pushing himself to get faster but, unlike in the first season, it is not working. I suspect it is a mental thing, that Barry is imposing limits on his speed on himself because of the trauma he suffered at Zoom’s hands. This reminds me of Wally West when he was the Flash back in the 1990‘s. For a while, Wally wasn’t nearly as fast as Barry because he was mentally blocking himself from being as fast as Barry was. Wally feared to replace Barry and that was causing him to limit his speed. When Wally finally confronted this about himself, he unlocked his speed and became just as fast as Barry. So, I suspect a similar thing is going on here.

Vandal Savage is introduced and I must say, the man is a perfect casting choice. I was hoping for a regular human that had awesome skills, but apparently, he seems to sense Hawkgirl nearby. And later, it’s painfully obvious he has some skill in the mystical arts. I suppose it makes sense considering the threat he needs to pose.

    Quote:
I know Barry needs to go to Oliver for help but this was a pretty weak reason. One attempt on Kenda’s life and Barry just “automatically knows” Vandal Savage is mystical? Give me a break. All Savage did was throw a knife at Kendra and kill some guys at a dock. Barry is smart but HOW does he “magically” know Vandal Savage is not a metahuman? Other than centuries old daggers, there is NO evidence for it! Kendra’s life is in danger from this guy and Barry just...automatically thinks he is not powerful enough to stop Vandal Savage and needs Oliver’s help? The threat should have been enhanced a LOT more than this. Very sloppy writing here, very sloppy writing.

    Quote:
It was funny to see Diggle throw up after Barry rescues Oliver and Damien’s reaction at the mysterious blur of speed that took Oliver away. And then Thea’s cute comment that Team Arrow knew the Flash. Is this a little hint she has a crush on the Flash? That is doubtful but it’s a cute thought.

I wish they would give Diggle more to do in these crossover episodes. Diggle is great...I want Team Flash to appreciate him as much as Team Arrow does. I guess they never need a experienced soldier like Team Arrow.

As for Thea...I honestly think Oliver would tell Thea she's not good enough for Barry. I mean you might love your sister but if she tries to kill people every month you'd warn your buddy to steer clear.

    Quote:
Guys like us don’t get the girl...I was wrong. No you weren’t, Oliver. Felicity will die and teach you a hard lesson in reality. This forced, and very fake, relationship will end badly and tragically. And stop giving Barry false hope.

I'm not a fan of Olicity either. BUT...I like the effect the relationship is having on Oliver. He hasn't been so broody this season. So if Olicity is the price we have to suffer for happy go lucky Oliver I'll accept it. And she was perfectly fine this episode. I don't think she whined once. It's like your friend who has an annoying girlfriend but you can tell your buddy's genuinely happy even though you think she's a devil woman or a train wreck.

    Quote:
Writers have a delicate balancing act with Arrow’s dark tone with Barry’s more lighter tone but the writers and producers pull it off very well with a nice scene of Team Arrow and Team Flash sharing some back and forth banter that is both funny and very nice to see. It is these kinds of scenes that make their worlds work so well together despite the different tones of both shows. And this is exactly why a crossover with Supergirl would work. It is not Kara’s powers that would overshadow Oliver’s greatness or what she can do that could outshine him, that is merely surface details. It is a well crafted story that makes these heroes work so well together and if Arrow and the Flash can find it’s balance without either hero being lost in the other’s shadow, the story works. And thus, the story, which would be the focus on any crossover with Supergirl, would be the focus and it would work. But, as of this writing, a crossover is not happening. At least for right now.

I always love the banter. One thing that struck me last year was that the Flash part of the crossover was a better Arrow episode than most Arrow episodes. They really get a lot of mileage showing how dissimilar these characters are. Even this year Oliver's all bright and sunny while Barry's all mopey...they've totally swapped.

    Quote:
Kendra’s life has literally turned upside down and from her perspective, things have become pretty crazy but who can blame her? Still, this scene is not very well acted by the actress. She just doesn’t sell it enough for me, but it’s good enough that it works and the point has been made.

One part I couldn't buy...no one with her body would be slumming it with Cisco. I'm sorry but she could bang a rap star or a football player and get a house out of the deal or something. Cisco's all goofy and short. It wasn't meant to be...she's too tall for you Cisco. (and no I don't hate Cisco...his juvenile humor is great)

I agree about the acting. A part of me did roll my eyes with her wandering about jumping off the building...maybe I won't be so boring anymore if I kill myself and let one of my past lives take over.

And I can't quite tell yet if I like Hawkman or not. He's a douchebag whose seen it all before but it kind of bothers me how indifferent he seems to be on whether he could get Kendra killed or not. Plus Hawkman's always seemed...clingy. Like maybe Hawkgirl wants to bang some other guys this lifetime bro...stop being so stalkerish.

    Quote:
And then Kendra finally let’s go of what is holding her back and embraces who she is, emerging as...Hawkgirl. So named by Cisco, who I suspect will end up naming Carter Hall Hawkman in turn.

Yeah her life was so boring she more or less committed spiritual suicide because she bored herself to death.

    Quote:
Overall, it was a very nice episode. It had a nice overall story even though the reason for the Flash seeking Oliver’s help was extremely weak and a poor excuse. There was some soul searching, finding who you really are, learning of your past, some funny scenes and plenty of banter between all characters involved. And we even saw Patty get some side action too, which was nice. Let’s not forget Velocity 6, which will definately come into play in future episodes.

    Quote:
All in all, not a perfect episode but it a gets a 4 out of 5 stars from me.

I thought the premise of getting them all together was dumb. But I loved almost everything else.

    ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:

    Quote:
-Nice going Cisco, you just blew Barry’s identity right in front of Kendra. Idiot.

    Quote:
-Velocity 9! I heard speculation that Harry would create this in order to make Barry faster and perhaps even test it on Jay Garrick. And, well, here it is. But in this episode, it’s not Velocity 9 just yet but Velocity 6. It seems we have a few versions of this speed formula to go through. Perhaps it will need to be perfected because it might have some nasty side effects and because it is temporary?

    Quote:
-Oops. It looks like Patty Spivott knows about Harry now! She has seen him. I did not expect to see this develop further as Patty confronts Harry in S.T.A.R. Labs and ends up shooting him.

    Quote:
-“In all my countless years, I have never encountered anybody with your capabilities. Astonishing!” --Vandal Savage to the Flash and Green Arrow. This is very clear evidence that Vandal Savage is NOT behind the creation of the metahumans and the particle accelerator.

    Quote:
-This episode did not show Damien working for Vandal Savage. So, unless the next episode reveals this in the next crossover event, it refutes the theory Damien is working for him. My money is that Damien is not working for Vandal Savage.

    Quote:
-How exactly did Malcolm Merlyn know what was going on in this episode? Does he have a spy in Star City I don't know about?

He leads the League of Assassins. He has spies everywhere.

That said...Malcolm also lies about everything. I wouldn't find it implausible that Vandal runs in the same circles as Ra's, Malcolm, or Damien and Malcolm left that detail out.

    EASTER EGGS:

    Quote:
    1. Krypto name drop! Barry grabs the piece of evidence left behind by Vandal Savage’s dagger after killing those men on the docks. He called it the, “Krypto crystal.”

    Quote:
    2. “Since when have our lives become an Indiana Jones movie?” Nice easter egg!

    Quote:
    BLOOPERS/MISTAKES:

    Quote:
    1. In the beginning of the episode, Harry and Caitlin are talking about Barry’s speed and Harry asks Caitlin how fast Barry has ever ran and Caitlin says, “A little over mach 2 when he ran back in time.” This is incorrect. Mach 2 is WAAAAAAY too slow to break the time barrier. Barry’s normal limit may be a little over Mach 2, but under special circumstances he can push himself way beyond that speed and during the two times he time traveled, he broke the time barrier by reaching the speed of light. By reaching the speed of light, then and only then, could Barry breach the time barrier (or merge with the speed force) and travel back in time. So, in order to time travel, reaching the speed of light is necessary. Mach 2 is simply way too slow and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense considering what has been firmly established in the comics. Sorry, Caitlin, your wrong.
