So as far as Team Flash knows, Mach 2 is his limit but they are associating it with time travel in error due to the particle accelerator and the wormhole.

I didn't get any sense that the Accelerator or Wormhole etc had any part of The Flash's feat. Even if one were to accept the bizarre notion that the scientists of team-Flash think Barry's maximum speed is Concorde-like supersonic and that that that is enough to break the time-barrier(!) simple logic dictates something else must be happening here as Reverse-Flash was clearly superior in speed but unable to replicate the feat. There is something in The Flash's power that he doesn't seem conciously aware of, strangely neither do the scientists watching him seem to question it either....

The accelerator was needed to release the energy particle that would react with the speed force to make the wormhole.

RF's link to the speed force was severed after he killed Barry's mother and by creating the Flash he recreates the link but it was tenuous and unstable hence the need for the tachyon generator from Mercury labs and the battery in the wheel chair to absorb energy.
