The mechanism for cracking into Time has to be more than just hitting a lowly Mach-2 though, you point to the Back to the Future films but the actual mechanism that allowed travel was the Flux-Capacitor, that was the core of the Professor's machine, and the Dolorean was the delivery mechanism as it were.
The obvious thing to explain how The Flash is doing it would be to refer to his comicbook science and explain how he internally alters both his speed and his vibratory rate to access time-travel, but conceptualising this on the screen, in an easy to digest manner, may be difficult to do. I do get the feeling we must be missing something here as surely even the writers and producers realise the nonsense of suggesting a low speed of Mach-2 is enough to crack into time itself and travel along it is nonsense. I would be tempted to say that the Mach-2 reference is an error, after all Barry has been able to see a Lightning Bolt and outrace it! But it seems to be the case that no one at the Flash office can agree on just how fast The Flash is right now...

Exactly. Flux Capacitor = Speed Force for Barry. ;\)

Your right, though. The writers do need to explain this better because I also believe the same as you that the Mach 2 is an error. Here is hoping we find out in future episodes.

It's interesting that a hero/villain performs one amazing feat, or use a power they haven't used for 20+ years, and that automatically propels them to a high status despite scans and evidence to the contrary. I don't know what is worse, selective feat picking that has only been done once or twice 20, or more, years ago or ignoring evidence from scans or the lack thereof. We need to stop putting our favorite heroes/villains on pedestals and start putting them where they really belong. But it's evident that people never will because they would rather accuse others of cherry picking feats, when they don't, and being 'morally superior' when they aren't. I guess being honest and as fair as possible only opens one up to being the target of childish accusations and fault finding by those who insist on acting petty and childish. What happened to a good debate between two civil, mature, adults?
