Did the writers realize they weren't good enough to pull it off and give up?

Maybe. All I know is Grant Gustin really liked the comics Flashpoint story and wanted it done on the show. And then it was done but in name only. To me, that speaks volumes and it says the showrunners weren't up to the task on creating their own Flashpoint based on the comics. They just wanted to do an episode to make Grant happy and move on. At least, that's the way I'm choosing to view things.

I really don't believe Grant Gustin's preferences came into it. Everything I read in the months between season led me to believe Flashpoint would run for several episodes, in the same way the mystique of Earth-2 informed the last season. I can only wonder if second thoughts became third thoughts as they realised there wouldnt be enough plot to support several episodes of this altered earth and it was parallelling last season's Earth-2 plot too closely.
I think there is a general consensus to be had that series and the Zoom storyline was much too similar to series 1 and the Reverse-Flash, three series in and something new and fresh is necessary for the season to avoid stagnation through repitition - the audience will only stand for so much rehashing after all.

The timeline was "restored" by RF, not by Barry, which is contrary to the narrative at the start of the episodes.

RF made it clear he reset things for HIMSELF and that Barry would have to learn how things were set back for him.

The timeline is not as it was before Barry went to save his mother.  There are changes that he is only just learning and things could get worse before they get better.

Granted there doesn't appear to be a war between the Amazons and Atlantis, but that's fine as that would likely be a bit much for a TV series.
