That reminds me of a anecdote I always liked from Louise Fletcher who played Nurse Ratchet in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Kai Winn on Star Trek Deep Space Nine. She liked that on Star Trek it gave you the freedom to overact and be operatic. Like some people hated Avery Brook's overacting on that show...but that's what the show is geared towards...overacting.

That is a great example because yeah, Fletcher got it from the beginning, her character was one of the best on the show because she knew she could take it further to that over-the-top realm and keep it real and not cartoony because she knew you had to, to make it work at all.

Avery Brooks was really boring when DS9 started and he was playing it really straight. It wasn't until Sisko became sort of larger than life that the character became fun and memorable.

I'm the same way. People hated crazy Sisko but I loved it. I mean he chewed scenery with the best of them. Whenever Sisko got a crazy or lose his temper scene I tended to enjoy it.
