Also know as "Sword of the Valiant".
Based off the poem of one of the better known Aurthurian legends, this is the second film of this title made by the same director as he did one in 1973 which I havent seen.
This one has Sean Connery as the titular bad guy and he is having fun with the role, with a big bushy beard and armour which shows off his chest muscles. The Green knight rides into King Arthur's court and issues a challenge. He will give one knight a chance to chop off his head with an axe. If the knight fails, then the green knight gets to to chop the knight.
The knights of the round table are pretty scared of the magical green knight so Arthur is about to accept his challenge when a young page boy, Gawain, played by SnS regular Miles OKeefe, speaks up.
Miles, who I think is dubbed, wears a page boy, he-man style bob haircut which is just so cute. He succeeeds in chopping off the green knight's head, but Sean's still living head commands his body to come get the head.
When it is the Green knight's turn, he shows mercy, allowing Gawain a year to grow a beard, before getting his head chopped off. He also gives Gawain a riddle to solve to cheat his fate. The rest of the film is Gawain questing to find the answer.
While its overall a bit silly, with lots of bad magical special effects, it really feels like a throwback to old peplum style films. Lots of magic, such as an invisible ring and the green knight turning morgan lefaye into a frog.
But it has quite a few good jokes, not taking itself too seriously, for instance, when dressed in plate armour, Gawain asks his squire how to relieve himself, at which the squire presents a kind of can-opener.
And later, during a joust, one of the villains tells his henchman to use his crossbow and "shoot Gawain in the back". The dumb henchman shoots the other knight, prompting the villain to say "Wrong back!" And John Rhys Davis plays a character whose name seems to be the Baron Foie de Gras, which is just brilliant.
overall, its much more in the style of old chanson de geste than an 80s sword and sorcerery flick. The scenery is decent, set in Wales and France. and it has another synth soundtrack, which seemed to happen a lot in SnS 80s flicks.
