Always thought the real catch was that it wasn't a dream.

And now Kevin's parents exploded. Happily never after.

It's a great double bluff. Its a dream then it isn't.

Apparently Sean Connery appearing as a firefighter was a happy coincidence. He was scheduled to appear in the final fight, leading the company of archers, but was unavailable that day. so Sean himself suggested that he show up as a firefighter.
It seemed to reinforce the theme that the same people continue to appear throughout history as suggested by the pair of interrupted lovers.
