There are two Mr. Fears in the MU: alan Fagan and Larry Cranston. I think Cranston is the better of the two. Currently, Ed Brubaker has turned Cranston/Mr. Fear into a top notch Daredevil foe. I read somewhere that he couldn't understand why he wasn't a major DD foe, so that is why he decided to use him. And he's been doing a bang up job with Cranston in his current DD storyline.
Frankly, I've wanted to see Cranston again for years now, ever since two other writers named Karl Kesel and Joe Kelly turned him into a big-time threat waaaay back in DAREDEVIL#364-375. Cranston thought Matt Murdock was a hypocrite by breaking the law he so openly upheld whenever Murdock was running around as a vigilante. And so, Cranston orchestrated a major plot, working behind the scenes by hiring Grey Gargoyle, Insomnia and a few other villains to do his dirty work. He even took over the Kingpin's radio staion, WFSK, where he used DD's then girlfriend Karen Page in his scheme. I started reading these issues this morning, and I enjoyed them. In fact, I liked all of the Kesel/Kelly run.
And now, Larry Cranston/Mr. Fear is back once again, having worked behind the scenes, just like he did before, before coming out in the open. And, according to the preview pages of this week's issue, Cranston isn't going to even let the Hood stand in his way of revenge against Matt Murdock, a man he hates and wants to destroy.
So I give Brubaker major props for finally bringing Cranston back after all of these years, something I've wanted to happen. Thanks, Mr. Brubaker, and I am looking forward to reading the conclusion!
