That's patently false.

Could have sworn practically everybody knew.

Nothing has really changed in this regard, except, it used to be that there was no risk. Today there is risk aplenty.

I don't know what you mean by "risk". The status quo gets set back to zero almost every time. The dead return to life, the Baxter Building gets rebuilt, Iron Man regains control of his company, etc.

DC and Marvel's universes are essentially static, no dramatic change ever seems to stick. So Steve Rogers is dead, how many people really believe that is going to stick? Heck, didn't Joe Q say early on that "dead is dead"? How quickly did he backpedal from that when writers like Joss Whedon wanted Colossus back?
