...when you were 17+ years old? And what was the comic that drew you in?

...so says former Montreal Canadiens goaltender, and Canadian parliamentarian, Ken Dryden. And so says also, the bassist of Kiss, and star of subsequent reality shows, Gene Simmons. (Or at least he claims that men, unlike women, will love forever the interests - music, etc - he had when he was 10!)

And as it happens, when I was 10 Ken Dryden was winning Stanley Cups, Kiss was the ultimate band, and Marvel was still cutting edge!!!

No, people generally can't come into comics when they're older than 17, especially in an age when comics have no relevance to the world at hand. Maybe when we were a World at War an 18-year old, especially one in uniform, might start reading Captain America, etc; or in the 60's a 17-year old may start reading Marvel because it was truly cutting edge and relevant; or even in the 80's I could see a 17-year old student being drawn to the X-Men, because it still maintained the appeal of a relevant fantasy-take on our world. But...

A 17-year old getting into the crap that passes for new stuff now, when its merely old stuff revisted in a perpetually-regurgitating fashion, and has been driven into the ground so bad that even I, cynical as I am, cannot view these boards without acknowledging, 'hey, everybody's puking over this stuff, I'm not crazy, I don't buy this s**t, and from what I can see and hear, intelligent people won't be buying it much more either, they're all buying Essentials and Masterpieces, which preserve the Marvel Universe when it was based in our world, and provided a fantasy escape for intelligent minds.
