> Are there any A-list black or African villains at marvel? There are obviously a lot of white and asian (Mandarin, Yellow claw, fu manchu, etc.) evil world beaters. but i realized i couldnt think of any major black villains, you know ones that can threaten the world or part of it. or have some ambition beyond just stealing money.
> the black ones i think of tend to be on the less powered side and often become semi-heroes (rocket racer, prowler, equinox, etc) almost like the writers feel guilty about writing black villains and have to make them "misunderstood". others are just part of a larger group, like thunderball or man-ape
That's part of it. Regardless of intentions of the writers, a white man continuously beating up a black man isn't socially acceptable.
Others reasons include the fact that most A-list villains were created in the 60s, a time when racial groups weren't shown a lot in various media. Another reasons is that most comic writers are white males, and they prefer to write white male characters.
> anyway, im sure there are some major league black villains out there. I just cant think of any at the moment. can anyone help me out?
Apocalypse is probably the most popular. But of course you can say that he doesn't look black. Others include Kilmonger and Man-Ape (major Black Panther villains), Cardiac, Tombstone, and Vermin (minor Spider-Man villains), Alex and Geoffrey Wilder (of Runaways), Thunderball (Wrecking Crew), Cardinal and Midnight's Fire (New Warriors villains), Barracuda (Punisher), Moses Magnum and Tempo (X-Men villains), etc.
So they are out there, with various degrees of popularity. For a somewhat more extensive list try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_black_supervillains
