> 1) Spider-Man: In the top 3 in terms of general superhero icons (with Superman and Batman). Being number one for Marvel isn't in dispute.
>
> 2) Hulk: Too unique visually to not be more popular. Television series, movies, and licensing boosted him to this spot. Again, I don't see how anyone can dispute this.
>
> 3) Iron Man: Visually unique, easy to remember name, around since the 60s, appearance easily matches the name.
>
> 4) Wolverine: Sprung to popularity in the 90s with video games, cartoon shows, movies, and just general licensing. His main problem is that the only thing people associate with the character visually is the metal claws. Really needs to develop a uniform look across the different media in order to become more well known.

I really liked the Iron Man movie but I am really surprised by all the good results of Tony Stark among the answers.
Indeed, he is one of Marvel's "big three avengers" and the movie was great.
Nevertheless, most people of my generation (I am 33 years old and the only comics fan around) did not remember who Iron Man was before seing the movie banners.
