Generally, people find it harder to identify with Ben than Peter. Nerds > Jocks. Everymen rule. And all that jazz.

Anyway, it's important to note that neither MTU nor MTIO were cancelled for lack of sales/popularity. MTU morphed into Web of Spider-Man and MTIO morphed into Ben's solo series.
