Thor often gets dumbed down and/or powered down in the pages of the Avengers to make the rest of the team relevant. If he were to face some of the menaces the Avengers face in his solo book, he would be able to take care of business by himself.

That problem seems to have been resolved in more recent comics, where he's treated as a god-king figure and operates on a different plane than the other heroes. Secret Invasion had him help save the day against the Skrull Army and the Jan-Bomb, but leave after the battle due to his scorn for Tony Stark. Ditto in the FCBD Avengers comic, where he's incapacitated at the start, allowing the New Avengers to actually face challenge.

The downside is that it makes him come off as an aloof bastard, but it's preferable to him being Hercules-sans-meading.
