-- Jim Rhodes. In Iron Man, he was the less-effective replacement for Tony Stark, drifting through paid missions and relying his fists despite wearing an incredibly versatile technological wonder. Put him among the West Coast Avengers and he can single-handedly save the team from Josten-as-Goliath, match team-killer Graviton blow-for-blow for a little while, and beat anyone and their brother down in his War Machine rig.

Well, of course he was the less-effective replacement for Tony, because Tony just dropped the job on Rhodey then disappeared to drink himself to death. Given that Rhodey had to figure most of it out for himself with only the rudimentary explanations intern Morely Erwin could give him about the suit's basic operations, I think he did exceptionally ( and the instances on WCA were later in Rhodey's armored career, when he'd become accustomed to operating the armor ). Iron Man armors are inherently difficult to pilot, hence why Tony's having to downgrade models in the current arc to accommodate his deteriorating mental faculties

Also consider that Rhodey didn't really need to use the armor's more exotic features for the way he fought. Rhodey was more physical and pragmatic with his approach, and a far better fighter than Tony by condition and training. Tony employs more of the armor's weaponry because he approaches the world as an engineer, using specific tools for specific jobs, but there are several situations where an elaborate harmony of electromagnetic beams doesn't work any better than a mechanical punch to the face.
