    The problem was that Rhodes seemed to be both more capable witht he armor and generally more sane in appearances with other heroes than on his own; in the same period when he was losing the Brothers Grimm completely or being outwitted by the Termite, he was also shown doing stuff like using the armor's sound projection to defeat Goliath-Josten, tapping external power sources to match Graviton in single combat, and rigging the Uni-beam to short out Blacklash's gear in Marvel Team-Up. These are specific skills with the armor that he simply never demonstrated -- and indeed, was sometimes portrayed as ignorant of -- in the Iron Man title itself.

Fair enough; I agree that he was more adept at the armor in team-up books, but I don't think he was incompetent in his own ( at least, when he had all his marbles ).

    Except that, as I said, writers of Rhodes's appearances outside the book seemed to have him go with "what would Tony do?"

Unfortunate but inevitable, I suppose.
