Reply Subj: what makes the SENTRY so special?

sure the sentry is VERY powerful but why is he so feared by all?
can' he be beaten like anyone else?
i mean thor can be beaten and he is almost as powerful, so why him?

Thor has ties and a history that limits his usage. Sentry is an enigma wrapped in cheesecloth, a writer can basically utilize him for any purpose they want and not have to explain much or make concessions to other writers, etc to use him. He can be as powerful as wanted or as useless as needed in any given situation and the only real explanation required is, "It's the Sentry, what do you expect?" In one book he can wipe out any adversary in a single panel, in another he can just vanish with no explanation needed or sit in a corner afraid of his own shadow. He makes telling a story the way a writer wants easy. He may be explained by the writers as 'incredibly deep and complicated with a myriad of mysteries to uncover' but he's really just an overly simplified plot device that alleviates the need to work too too hard in explaining or justifying various stories.
