    IIRC, the original Kindle actually had good contrast on their screen, making it easy to read. Which was one of the major selling points (easy on the eyes).

    Then they brought out the Kindle 2, which had bad contrast (hard on the eyes), and people hated it. Many people wanted the first version instead of the second.

    Then they brought out the DX, which apparently has good contrast (easy on the eyes) again. The DX also supports pdfs files now.

Yeah, but one thing about the PDF support: Any PDFs are scaled to the size of the Kindle screen (rendering scrolling and the zoom inoperable). So, you better hope the PDF was created with the Kindle in mind, or you're screwed.
