It's sorta complicated, so I'll try and keep it as simple as I can.. Way back in Adam Warlock's first series, he came across the Church of Universal Truth and their leader the Magus. After his initial confrontation with the Magus, Adam discovered that the Magus was his own future self, who had travelled back in time to form the Church of Universal Truth. It transpired that the In-Betweener would eventually transform Adam into the Magus, who although being evil, would be the Champion of Life and oppose Thanos, who was the Champion of Death.

In the mean time Thanos and his assassin Gamora, allied himself with the present day Adam to try and stop the creation of the Magus, under the logic that Adam would be a weaker Champion of Life than the Magus and thus easier to defeat. Through some device of Thanos's, Adam managed to travel to a karmic dimension which showed all the possible paths his life could take. Using the power of his soul gem, Adam destroyed the path that would lead to the creation of the Magus, negating it and chose a shorter path for himself, which would lead to his death at the hands of Thanos a short time later.

Martyr's new boss Oblivion is one of the abstract entities that favour death, and would see it in his own interests to see the Champion of Life destroyed, so when Adam made the choice to use his now unused timeline, knowing full well that this could lead to the resurrection of the Magus, it should be no surprise that Martyr had to try and kill him.

I am not sure I would say favor Death. Prefer Death over Life yes. But Oblivion is all about everything ending.

Here are a couple articles on Adam Warlock - Magus that we did to bring everyone up to speed:

Part One:

Part Two:

Regarding why would Adam anchor the timeline to the Magus one, we have to ask is that Adam?

As we saw in previous issues whenever Adam would expend a considerable amount of magic/energy he would look like the Magus - maybe the Magus was disguising himself and couldn't keep the spell up when using a large amount.

Also, don't forget about the other Cocoon the Matriarch still has, could that be the real Adam?
