Subj: No-one's denying women the vote here. If they wanted to read a comic... all they need do is pick one up. The fact is most JUST DON'T WANT TO. ; )

    Quote:
I assume you're not familiar with the concept of " privilege " as it relates to identity politics, since you seem to equate the fact that girl's media isn't pushed to be more like boys with the opposite ( despite the fact that being a male gives you more opportunities in terms of entertainment as well as wealth and success, and has for the entirety of human civilization ). As much as you might not like Arana ( and you didn't have to read it if you didn't want to, so it's hardly like Marvel took away your comics by publishing it ), the gesture does little to switch the situation so that males are the disenfranchised audience.

a) No-one is saying women are "less than" and therefore lack the "right" to read a comic.  No-one is insulting women.  If all women want to pick up the next issue of Thunderbolts = then power to them... I would LOVE my favourite comic to be catapulted into the number 1 selling spot by women.  I would absolutely LOVE IT!  If the fan base of Thunderbolts consisted of me, Rev, Dermie and women (while still remaining the same comic) I would be a happy chappy.
b) "privilege"? Women have the ability to pick up and comic, purchase it, then read it; don't they? The fact is they don't want to. It has nothing to do with the privileged or lack there of. It has to do with women, by and large, not being "action" fans (Marvel comics being an action based genre).
c) "you didn't have to read it if you didn't want to" Good point! So... if women "don't want to read comics" as they stand... they don't have to \:P It's their choice. It's their right. And quite clearly women CHOOSE not to read comics. I posted a poll on the Ms. Marvel Message Board about who is male and female. So far only TWO posters (on a female lead comic) are women. The rest all men. What does that tell you? That women lack the capacity to reply to a poll? That women are "intimidated" by the boys club Ms. Marvel Message Board ;\) Or maybe, JUST MAYBE, it says most comic readers are men... even in a female lead book. \:P

    Quote:
The middle ground superhero comics are still a boys' club by and large, and if the " original fanbase " wants them to stay that way without any gestures to other groups, they should be jettisonned.

I hope you want Marvel Divas "jettisoned" on the same grounds? And the View? And all Sex and the City films? And all Barbie Dolls? And all Nancy Drew novels? Because heaven forbid we think of men and women as different! I ask you this: how can you defend women only wanting to read "female" characters, and yet say things should never be just for one gender (implying all things should be equal, regardless of gender)? That's seems like a mixed message to me. ;\)

The fact is you are desperately looking for unfounded misogyny, where it doesn't exist... when the cold hard truth is: women, by and large, just don't want to read comics.  And I'd yet to see anyone contradict or deny that statement.  \:\)   Do you honestly think Marvel WOULDN'T try and cash in on 50% of the population, if they could?   Are you that naive?
