It's ROM without all of the groovy stuff Marvel gave it. It's just about the toy.

"...the things Marvel created around the series, the specific space knights, backstory beyond that on the original toy's box, and all the Marvel Universe elements, those things stay with Marvel."

I mean, it could be cool, but I never liked a the toy at all. Adored the comic. It's just not going to be the same.

Looks like IDW has secured the rights and this is an all new series.

He pretty much looks the same except for an improvement that you will see on the cover.

The marvel series was about ROM and his mission against the Wraiths.

The problem IDW has is that the Wraiths, Galador, and ALL the other spaceknights are Marvel creations and Marvel likely still owns them all and won't part with them.

marvel likely feels that they got all the mileage out of ROM that they could and that the demand isnt there for a return of ROM. Galador and the spaceknights Marvel created seem to only be trotted out when it is time to renew the trademarks anyway.

Also who knows? Perhaps by not doing reprints, etc. they get out of any royalties or credit due to Bill Mantlo. Wouldn't be the first time a writer was shafted.

So we get all new material. Also hopefully a few upgrades to ROM

The whole ROM trademark situation is similar to the Captain Marvel trademark situation between DC and Marvel

DC owns the original character (Captain Marvel/SHAZAM) and all characters associated with it.

MARVEL however has the trademark rights to publish a book titled Captain Marvel. As long as they regularly publish anything titled Captain Marvel they keep the trademark.

Neither company wants to part with their Captain Marvel trademarks, hence DC now calls him SHAZAM.

For IDW they can use ROM but nothing that Marvel created: the other spaceknights, Galador, Brandy Clark, Dire Wraiths, etc.

Marvel cannot call ROM by name or show him in Spaceknight armor form. For a time they did use his human form but they don't even do that now. Thanks to the Spaceknights mini series years ago, he is missing and presumed dead, no body has been found.
