I have a friend who's looking for the prices of some of his comics. So far he's told me he has Secret Wars #8 (from the 80's, with the intro of the alien costume) and Amazing Spider-Man #300. I looked them both up on mycomicshop.com, and it gives prices, but also says either "CGC" or "CBCS". I'd like to ask what those things mean.

Thanks.

Well, first, technically Amazing SPider-Man # 252. Secret Wars #8 is just the origin. I know it is weird.

CGC= Certified Guaranty Company

CBCS= Comic Book Certification Company

They are the two main companies that grade, certify, and encase in plastic containers, comic books. It is for those who want to preserve them for collection or more likely investment.

Listing them just means that they are officially certified by a trusted company.

Personally, I view it as turning a comic into a stock certificate. Which is fine for some, but not my style.

I remember when I first learned about this as a teenager, and saw the comic entombed in plastic, i wondered to myself, "but... how do you read them?"

Hope that cleared things up.
