I like the guy alot and I do think the played up the comedy aspect in particular in Guardians 2 and IW, but it is not like he was subtle in the first Guardians either.

Drax is a tragic character in the comics for sure, to varying degrees, but not sure if he could do it or not.

The getting beat up thing is hard to say. I mean he usually is not doing great against the big bads, but few are standing up to them alone in the films. Drax looked good against more mundane opponents for sure. And he did pretty well against Groot in the first Guardians.

Drax is a tough character, but he is not that powerful, at least the version they are most closely resembling from the comics.
