Just curious, why was the Green Goblin not in the original Sinister Six? Did Stan Lee/Steve Ditko just want to keep him unique/distance him from the rest of the villains...as they had bigger plans for him? Or did they just not have room in the group (sinister 7? \:\-\) ) Just curious is Stan had ever addressed this question before. It just seems odd that all of the other baddies were there...imagine: Doc Ock, Mysterio, Vulture, Sandman, Electro, and Green Goblin (instead of maybe Kraven for example).

The only thing I can think of is, all members of the Sinister Six had been defeated by Spider-Man and imprisoned for their crimes--a big factor in their desire for revenge. The Green Goblin had gotten away every time. Besides which, he was depicted as a planner, and the group only needed one of those.
