Why? He's written a his fair share of dark and heavier stories too. He writes in the tone that best serves the title, it just happens that he's been assigned a lot more "light" titles than "heavy". When he's assigned something dark (like Arkham Asylum or Avengers: The Initiative) he does dark. When he's assigned something humorous (Ren & Stimpy) he does humorous. When he's assigned big colourful action (The Thing) he does big colourful action.

He's gone on record to say that if he was ever assigned Amazing Spider-Man it wouldn't all be jokes and tea parties, there would be some of the bleaker elements there that have been long associated with the character.

Was Spider-Man/Human Torch light-hearted? For the most part, yes. But that wasn't Amazing Spider-Man, it was Spider-Man/Human Torch. When have Spider-Man and Human Torch team-ups not been light-hearted?

Would you buy Amazing Spider-Man if it were written by Dan Slott?
