Probably so the average Joe on the street would still recognize Spider-Man. The all-black may've been too great a departure from the norm.

True, and sometimes what works in the comics won't work on the big screen. No matter what you think of the Green Goblin I costume from the first movie (thought it sucked too), just imagine it with pointy boots, an oversized purse and a whole lot of purple! Works in the comics, doesn't translate to the big sceen.
