Completely disagree. That was added later. In the beginning, Venom hated Pete for ruining him just like he did in the movie. If they would have jumped right into the Lethal Protector mode than they would have completely changed his origin.

It really isn't, if you look at his first appearance (Amz 300) you see him try not to kill a cop and, after he does, lament on how innocent death is always unpleasant and that he regrets its necessary.

Michelinie said in an interview once that he intended Venom to be "a Superhero that just happened to be completely insane" (I've always liked that description).

So its always been at the core of Venom as a character
