A thread below made me think of this, why not give your opinions on this issue?

To me, it's prominent for two reasons, one VERY big one.

1. Ned Leeds death. A pivotal moment in the Spider-Saga.

2. Spidey kills someone. Not through inaction or accident ( sort of ), bit by hitting a normal person so hard he essentially pulps her.

Obviously he was set-up to do this by Wolverine and Charlie, the latter choosing death over a life in captivity, but the fact remains that Spidey kills someone with his bare hands, the only time I can ever recall that happening.

Oh yeah, anyone else agree that Spidey totally kicked Logan's ass in this? \:\)

Though if you actually go back and re-read the comics, it's not made very obvious (except of course, the comic we're discussing).

Spider-Man was written quite well. This was a fish out of water scenario, and him being written as confident or calm would've been out of character. He isn't stone cold like Batman, and he can't just say "Well , I haven't used my ice breath in a while" like Superman can. He's a relatively normal human with powers, and at that young of an age, wasn't that exposed to elements like the KGB.

Wolverine was handled well also. Completely in character for him to want to deal with his problems by himself, and not drag the X-folks down with them. This is also my favorite "kind" of Wolverine. Tactical, almost spy like, and not extremely super powered.
