Essentially, we have Mephisto agreeing to include the restoration of the "secret identity" as part of the deal thanks to MJ forcing the issue.

Now as far as I can tell, in these types of stories (Faustian pact, deal with the devil...) the "devil" always does what he says he will do in some way.

If we are now to believe that Mephisto was in NO WAY involved in the "re-masking", you would need to find some reason that Mephisto would not honor the deal made.

Considering it was Mephisto who brought MJ in for this part of the story, the most likely explanation would be that MJ's presence was merely one of Mephisto's illusions, which means there was no actual deal made.

The only other way to possibly explain Mephisto not honoring this extenstion of the deal that I can see is that MJ had no real impact on Peter's decision to accept the deal.
