> > BTW, I don't really see things a any better with someone other than Mephisto being responsible for the "re-masking", because if it wasn't something that Mephisto did without Peter's knowledge, Peter has to be considered responsible (he wanted this to happen) for a mind-altering process that affected and apparently continues to affect millions, which amounts to the moral equivalent of lacing New York's water supply with LSD. And apparently it was done largely, if not entirely for selfish ends, so he could stop being Spider-Man without having to worry about the safety of Aunt May, Mary Jane et al. and even use the re-establishment of his secret as a weapon in his vendetta against JJJ. That kind of behaviour you expect from a villain, not a hero.
> Dr. Strange has tampered with innocent people's memories on MANY occasions. Interestingly, Peter asked him to tamper with Felicia's to erase his secret identity but Strange refused, which was another part of the Black Cat seduces Peter storyline that seem contrived:
> Strange: It would be immoral to erase Felicia's memories.
> Peter: But Kurt tells me that you erased the memories of several people who saw you and his girlfriend Amanda use your powers. And those were innocent people, not burglars who made deals with the Kingpin that endangered their boyfriends.
> Strange: But Amanda's a lot prettier than you are.
> Michael

So Doctor Strange recognizes that tampering with people's memory is immoral, there you go.
(Another difference is of course that Peter voluntarily revealed his secret first to Felicia and later to the whole world. Spider-Man used to be about responsibility, now it is about weaseling out of responsibility for one's action, if need be by harming others).
