I'll admit the situation would be a little more palatable if that were the case. But even then, there would be other cans of worms that would be opened. You would think he'd be constantly brooding about what he has lost, and it would be a focal point of his thoughts whenever he encountered anyone who once knew him better.

Smallville actually got this right last week, with Clark clearly affected by his regressed relationship with Chloe.
