    If they didn't take up Mephisto's offer then Aunt May would have died. They just wouldn't have known that it was Mephisto's fault she died.

Be that as it may, the revised version IMO still is even less palatable, because now in addition to the general objections that you don't make deals with the/a devil because he'll invariably screw you over, you now have a situation where the arguments against giving in to a blackmailer apply. Plus of course that the way things turned out would seem to indicate that Mephisto can alter reality without bothering to get the consent of the persons affected - he prevented Peter from being there to save Aunt May's life - so why didn't he simply prevent the wedding and marriage as it happened, e.g. by striking a deal with Chubby Muerte to free him, if such a minute change was all it took?
