Right actress wrong character.

Emma Stone will be playing Gwen Stacy.

Apparently Emma Stone (Easy A, SuperBad, ZombieLand, Ghost of Girlfriends Past) is up for the role.

The only 2 worries I have is that she does seem to do some of her lines with some sarcastic tone and if they were to go the model route with the character it just wouldn't fit with her girl next door look.

Not going to comment on her hair not being red...

She would be a great addition to the film.

    The Disgruntled Greek

I wouldn't be surprised if the reason why Emma Stone wound up being cast as Gwen Stacy went something like this:

Perhaps, the original script had both Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson in the movie, meaning that both parts had to be casted. Emma Stone, as it had been rumored earlier, may have been auditioning for the role of MJ and maybe they thought she was perfect for the part. In the meantime, some other actress was asked to play the role of Gwen. Perhaps that actress, however, wasn't all that keen about the part. So, seeing how there was "chemistry" between Andrew Garfield and Stone during their script readings, Stone was then asked to play Gwen instead, and the filmmakers decided to write MJ out of the movie entirely and save her for the possible sequel. After all, Sony has to have a Spider-Man film by 2012 or the rights go to Disney, meaning that they need to get this film out as fast as possible and probably realized that trying to cast two of Spidey's great love interests at this point was too time-consuming. At least, that's what I'm guessing is what happened here.
