It's also a deliberate reversal of the Hobgoblin's first appearance, where the future Hobby is led to a Green Goblin stash by no-name loser Georgie Hill and then kills Hill so he alone can loot it.

It's also making it a definite recurring theme and tradition that anyone who uses the Hobgoblin identity is ultimately destined to go out like a complete chump thanks to someone else who wants to use the name.

And yeah, I'm alone on this, but as much as I DO NOT WANT EVIL PHIL, I've been waiting 15 years for Old Man Rod to get his comeuppance for what he did, and I'm strongly tempted to break the boycott so I can see the beheading happen.

As much as he's been my #1 "I hate the guy because he killed a character I like", and if any Spider-Man villain totally had a decapitation coming, it was him, I do want to reign back the urge for gloating, because there are some perfectly decent guys here who've been waiting years for this, and now they know how I've been feeling since 1996, but on the other hand, there are other guys on the Internets who weren't so decent, and over a decade of suffering through their crap and one can't help but have some schadenfreude.

But in the end, none of us got what we wanted. Not a one of us. As one of the ten guys who actually read his solo book, I do not want a crazy, murderous Phil Urich.

And between the utter lack of appearances from 1998 onwards, and then getting rid of him so we can have a new Hobgoblin, it does kind of sound like Marvel giving a final vote of no confidence in Rod as the Hobgoblin, and getting rid of him as an obligatory act to rehabilitate the identity.

Still, wow, the Internets really are going crazy over this, even more than I expected. But still, give it an issue or two, I'm sure the Spider-Man franchise will find something worse to outrage everyone with. I'm amazed that the outrage over the Menace-Baby not being Norman's blew over as quickly as it did.
