But wasn't it Stan Lee himself who did this, in an Amazing Spider-Man Annual? I don't disagree with your evaluation of the decision--I just don't think Stan can pass the buck here.

Oh, you're right. I must've forgotten that. I could've sworn it was hit on by a writer shortly after Stan'd departure, but it appears I'm wrong.
