A lot of this I was unaware of.

My personal opinion is that the Hobgoblin was doomed from the start.

While it's best that Kingsley is the Hobgoblin the fact is that the way Stern wrote and developed him, he didn't make a great deal of sense. How does a hack fashion designer who plagiarized his stuff somehow manage to reverse engineer Norman Osborn's goblin formula and supposedly improve on it? It still doesn't make sense, no more than Miles Warren somehow inventing human cloning on ESU salary makes sense. These are poor decision choices, where the characters do not convince you that they are able to do what they end up doing.

The other problem with the "Hobgoblin mystery" is that there's no real way Peter could conceivably investigate or solve it. Roderick Kingsley is not a person known to him and Spider-Man comics and titles by nature aren't detective fiction, they are action/suspense/comedy. In fact Marvel Comics as a whole is antithetical to detective stories and mysteries. They really don't have many notable ones compared to DC (Watchmen, Hush, Long Halloween among others).

However, maybe if Stern had stayed on the title, things could have improved and been fixed. And Stern's slow buildup of the Hobgoblin is still fun to read. Instead he decided to leave, and Tom Defalco and others were stuck with a mystery story where the intended culprit is some random figure whose notable stories was in Spectacular Spider-Man, in a title and publication where mystery stories are hard to do as it is.

So while Marvel Comics' Editors Ruined Hobgoblin the fact is the reason they did so is because Stern didn't leave them a lot to work with.
