Peter's responsible for an explosion that decimates the outskirts of York, Pennsylvania because he mishandles technology he stole from the Fantastic Four after they refuse to help him with the problem. Also Mary Jane has broken up with him and is now with a dude called Paul, and is apparently a step-mom to his kids
This might be my 'copium' talking here, but
There are a lot of misdirects/red herrings going on presently.
1. We don't know what became of Peter and MJ at the conclusion of Spider-Man Beyond when that being bathed in light crashed MJ's apartment and told Peter to come with him
2. Paul's 'daughter' is a red-head who looks very similar to MJ, dimples and everything.
3. MJ tells Peter in the issue to stop doing what he's doing, so she's back to being frustrated that he's Spider-Man again, or it could possibly be he's doing things that endanger the kids and it's taking him away from being with her, and she'd rather be with him than Paul, which means a whole lot of relationship problems for her and the family if she wants to get more serious.
4. There's the whole Moira McTaggart and Hellfire Gala thing going on
I'm intrigued by all this set up, but yeah, on first glance it's a troll psy-op job and a pretty sad and desperate one
I wrote my review of this issue here:
Notes on ASM#1 (2022) by Wells/JRJR/Hanna/Menyz
My belief is that this is the worst opening issue of any run on Marvel Comics for at least 30 years.
