For a little while Superman had his traditional costume but the symbol was black I think it was around JLA #72, and was back to yellow after #80 but i'm not sure. Anyway what was the story behind that I haven't found the answers anywhere. Can someone explain why his symbol was black for that brief time, I'd really like to know.

A lot of people died during the DC epic "Our Worlds At War", including Wonder Woman's mother (who herself served as Wonder Woman during World War II, and later when Diana was on "hiatus").
Out of respect for those who'd sacrificed themselves to save others, Superman began wearing black on his costume.
