It was never shown in the pages of Superman: The Man Of Steel prior to issue #22, which had John Herny's basic origin. It was depicted in flashback there and over the years. In Steel Annual #2, the whole issue was labeled as "Year One", which went back and showed John's story from his youth to when we see him in the Steel suit in MOS #22. The book is seen not so much as a flashback, but the highlights of his life.
