I read that Superman used to kill in his early adventures. If so, how many people did he kill, and when\why did he stop?

I can't give you an actual count, but as for the second part of the question, he likely stopped when the writers decided that a real hero shouldn't be shown doing stuff like that, even to bad guys.

For example, I think he was in a European country during World War II and in dealing with a "murderous spy" type, he threw the guy into the air. The panel plainly showed the spy crashing into tree branches maybe a quarter mile away.

I mean, MAYBE he survived, but it's more likely he didn't.

That would have been Kal-L, in our current way of looking at things, tho'...not Kal-El. (And it's even possible Kal-L's history's been slightly retconned so he never did that sort of thing either.)

The present continuity's Superman has (to the best of my knowledge and memory) only "killed" three people, and those were a group of three Kryptonians from a parallel reality who'd just totally destroyed their version of Earth. Why? Because the people wouldn't be their slaves and dared to fight back.

Superman was immune to that reality's kryptonite, and used one type (gold) to remove their powers.

Problem is, they then told him that after he left, they'd find a way to somehow get their powers back, and they'd find a way to HIS reality....

...and would destroy the mainstream DCU's Earth too.

Superman immediately exposed them to their version of green kryptonite, and in a short time they were dead.

He then went home and more or less had a nervous breakdown, exiling himself in space for months.

Only the input from an alien philosopher/teacher got him to go home.

Except for Doomsday (at the time a mindless animal that was apparently going to wipe out all life on Earth), Superman's never killed again.
