Ah. I always took that scene as Superman absorbing the energy rather than the explosion. That's still a feat, but it's difficult to tell if the energy would have been the same as the Mageddon explosion.

Though there was that other feat that involved Supes moving the insanely gigantic machinery inside Mageddon...

Mageddon detonates as Superman is absorbing his anti-sunlight. But, for the sake of argument, how would that be any different if it didn't detonate? What was inside Mageddon was simply raw *concentrated* energy, as Superman explained, and Superman took it all in one big gulp. It wasn't like a chemical reaction waiting to happen, just compressed power set for release.

That's Mageddon harnessing Superman's "great strength to kill us (all the heroes) all."
