Mageddon detonates as Superman is absorbing his anti-sunlight. But, for the sake of argument, how would that be any different if it didn't detonate? What was inside Mageddon was simply raw *concentrated* energy, as Superman explained, and Superman took it all in one big gulp. It wasn't like a chemical reaction waiting to happen, just compressed power set for release.

That's Mageddon harnessing Superman's "great strength to kill us (all the heroes) all."

I thought that Diana and the others merely thought that Mageddon was detonating. Couldn't it have been an after-effect of his powers being drained or the creature being deactivated?

Mageddon was anti-sunlight, but I don't think there was definitive proof that it was the same level of energy the creature would have released. It may have been the same level as Mageddon intended to unleash, but it may have also been power source rather than the main means of causing the explosion.
