I think it was during OUR WORLDS AT WAR that Mongul actually trained Superman so's to be better prepared for what was coming; at one point he said to Superman 'You're holding back. You always have. You have NO idea how powerful you really are'.

Since this was AFTER the fight with Doomsday and Superman's "death", we have to assume that Clark was holding back then.

One wonders what would have happened if he hadn't.

We may get a clue from the "visions" had when he and Kal-L were fighting, seeing themselves in the other's life.

In one of the visions, Kal-L not only killed Doomsday, he didn't die himself.

"Our" Clark might have survived too, if he'd only let loose. Apparently even his durability can increase at such times, as someone mentioned seems to have happened during OWAW.

Thanks, Niddle. And, another question: is 'Our Worlds at War' worth reading, and was it a crossover or did it run in a single title? (sorry, that's 2 questions)
