Smith is a decent stand-up comic (see the footage on YouTube) and I liked his Daredevil run (the one he completed, rather than the one he abandoned) but his films are pretty dire. The promise he showed in "Clerks" has never been realised and he would have been a disaster for Superman.

And Jon Peters may well be an idiot, but his name was attached to "Batman" and "Superman Returns" and I loved both films.

In the case of Batman, he got lucky. With Superman Returns, he didn't have as much control. Bryan Singer did and the other producers did.
