    Quote:
Starting with this issue, the price of ACTION is now $3.99. Instead of the usual 22 pages of the main story, we were given only 20. Justifiying this price increase is the Captain Atom "Second Feature" (I like to call it a BACKUP), which is a mere 10 pages long. So in reality, I'm paying a dollar extra for the story I buy the book for, only to get two pages less of that same story. Additionally, I'm paying for a story I wouldn't buy on its own.

In spite of all the competition (videogames, DVD, cable TV, the Internet), it's still no wonder nobody buys comics anymore. Prices that historically rise faster than the rate of inflation, combined with asinine editorial decisions, are killing a once-great medium.

Unfortunately, the companies have crunched the numbers and realized a dollar price hike, even if they lose readers because of it, is still going to increase their bottom line. Take, for example, a comic that sells 50,000 units per month. Increasing the cover price one dollar, even if it costs them 25% of their readership, is still bringing in more money ($2.99 x 50,000 units = $149,500 vs. $3.99 x 37,500 units (25% of 50,000) = $149,625). Looking at the immediate future, it is the best strategy for them. (Long term, it can do nothing but harm, but comics aren't historically known for looking at the long-term picture.) I don't like it any more than you do, but these are the realities we face. The bright side is that we are getting, for now anyway, something for that extra dollar. Over at Marvel, the only thing they're giving readers for that extra dollar is a lighter wallet.
